SCOTTISH POWER

SCOTTISH POWER

ScottishPower has long been in the energy industry with roots dating far back the 1900s. This Glasgow-based business initially began in 1901 as the Clyde Valley Electrical Power Company. Throughout the years, it has gone through several undertakings until the year 2007 wherein it was completely acquired by Iberdrola, a Spanish multinational energy firm. From then on, ScottishPower focused on generating sustainable green energy at competitive rates across the cities of the United Kingdom.

Products

ScottishPower was the first vertically integrated energy company in the UK to proclaim the generation of 100% green electricity. They had recently shut down their coal-fired power stations but it was only in 2018 that they had finally come into a full circle by selling its last remaining gas plant to Drax Smart Generation. Relinquishing the use of coal and gas energy production entails a major strategic structuring. The company invested £5.2 billions in building projects for pipelines of renewables and smart grids with the objective of producing a cleaner, more sustainable, and at the same time affordable electricity to its consumers. To date, ScottishPower is generating 100% renewable energy coming from nature’s very own wind power.

Apart from green electricity and gas, the company also offers other products. ScottishPower’s Smart Meters conveniently facilitates automatic meter readings of electricity consumption. The unit also comes with an in-home display for easy visualization of the current usage in £s and pence. Meanwhile, the Smart Thermostat will enable the users to manage their energy more efficiently by setting up the right room temperature even when they are not at home.

In line with its advocate for cleaner and greener future, ScottishPower also supports the use of electric vehicles as a means to promote the reduction of harmful carbon emissions from the transport system. The Smart EV products will enable the drivers to charge their electric vehicles for up to 10 times lesser than the average cost of petrol. Needless to say, it is more economical and environmentally favorable in the longer run.

For home emergency and security, ScottishPower also offers Maintenance and Support plans to ensure the client’s policy coverage particularly for boiler care and kitchen appliances care. Furthermore, the company partnered with AXA to provide plumbing, drains, and electrical insurances for the safety and assurance of the consumers.

Coverage

ScottishPower is technically a distribution network operator for the central and southern Scotland, Merseyside, Cheshire, North Wales, and North Shropshire. Apart from that, the firm is also supplying green electricity and gas to over 5 million households and businesses throughout the United Kingdom.

Pros

  • Modern  Slavery Statement – ScottishPower respects and implements the human and labor rights particularly the Modern Slavery Act 2015. It is committed to abolishing any business affiliation that corresponds to slavery and trafficking.
  • Warm Home Discount – The company also supports vulnerable individuals struggling to pay for their electricity bills. An annual rebate amounting to £140 will be credited to qualified customer’s accounts over the winter period when bills are most likely higher than the average consumption.
  • YourEnergy Application – ScottishPower created a mobile application to enable its consumers to conveniently manage their accounts at fingertips. The app allows the tracking of their usage, viewing of balances, recent bills, payments, and the control of the smart thermostat.

Cons

  • Delayed Customer Service – Majority of the clients had problems regarding the inefficiency of the firm’s help and support service via phone. Customers complain that it cost them an inconveniently long period of waiting before their calls get addressed by an agent accordingly.
  • Smart Meter – Customers reported to have encountered several issues with ScottishPower’s smart meters. Some were annoyed how persistent the marketing team was for continuously offering the product despite previous rejections. Oddly enough though, when it comes to complaints it took them forever to either get the units installed, repaired or replaced.

ScottishPower is an established company with decades of experience in generating and distributing power for domestic and commercial use all throughout the different areas in the United Kingdom. However, the company may seem to have some lapses concerning their reputation especially in the field of customer service. Unfortunately, the firm established a mediocre Trustpilot score of only 0.3 out of 10. Setting aside any prejudice, ScottishPower still is a solid company with outstanding future goals to deliver greener and sustainable energy to its consumers.
